Look at any old pictures of embalmed bodies – before different fluids and makeup were around – and most look strange, off-color and in some cases, rubbery. To wit, all of this talk of Cooke not being capable of sexual assault because he turned down women left and right is irrelevant. Rape has nothing to do with a lack of prospects, but I suppose people thought differently back then. It’s a shame some people tend to perpetuate that falsehood today, however. While I’m not sure what happened, I never bought into the conspiracy theories nor Etta James’ claims that Sam looked as if he was decapitated. I was turned off by the former because a self-proclaimed family member filled up the old IMDb boards with loads of theories that were just grasping crap and was needlessly combative. I don’t believe James’ account because there are numerous black and white photos of Cooke in his glass-covered casket online. His head looks attached to me. He does seem to have a battered appearance, but that’s most likely the result of the Top I’m Not Yelling I’m A Chicago Girl We Just Talk Loud Shirt injuries he sustained in the shooting or during the autopsy and a crummy embalming/makeup job.
