Oh phew, I’m glad you’re getting a positive note from that— I worry that in trying to explain grieving for the medicated life I missed out on up until 2 years ago, I’d sound bitter and angry. Not so! My life has probably been unnecessarily difficult, but it’s still my own, and I’m mostly happy with what I’ve done- even the mistakes have led me to become who I am. I don’t think that if I’d been medicated at 14 or something I’d be an astrophysicist or something. But it’s OK to mourn for the added work, mental toll, and burden to others it took to get me where I am. I definitely feel like my adulthood was delayed due to ADHD and have been putting myself down for not having a house, kids, marriage, etc. To grieve about missing out on these Nice I Didn’t Go To Harvard I Went To Fort Sill Shirt things “on my perceived timeline” seems a lot more productive and healthy than tearing myself down.

That might’ve been related to being an undiagnosed autistic as well at the time. I think my ADHD was missed in part because of having been born and socialized female because of the differences in how the symptoms tend to appear.
